So Steve - you’re starting a new job (with a reverse commute) in ... call it White Plains, New York next week. And you have to go buy a car tomorrow with cash American. (Let’s forget about the cost of parking it in Manhattan). What does Steve buy?!
Eh, probably this:

Does this make me a bad person?

A bad person for wanting a Swedishbrick? Never. Volvo it up and Scandinavi-on down the road.

No it wouldn’t make you a bad person, Volvo wagons are cool around here right? I must say I’ve always liked these quite a lot.

You just passed this beauty up like it wasn’t even there. How can you live without this Plymouth in your life?

Reminds me of a Car Talk joke ...
Setup: What’s the first mention of a car in the Bible?
Punchline: And he drove them out in his Fury ...
Thanks, I’m here all week!

If I ever have to buy another car, it has to be a slushbox (SigOther can’t drive stick) and my chief concern is safety - I am getting older, and I want to survive if I run into something. Or if something runs into me ... so the answer is Volvo? I think so.

I think it’s a sensible choice, and I should be sensible at this point ....

But I should have said - it’s a blue Volvo, and I do not like blue cars. But I’d probably rarely see it in daylight.

What’s wrong with blue? Though I must say this one is a bit too much on the gray-ish side, I generally like blue cars.

Rear wheel drive Volvo wagons are cool here. This is no turbo 940 wagon.

But this is a 5 cilinder, turbocharged box with offroad potential....

The Polestar looks great, and some Hondas look really good in electric blue. But the ‘87 300D I bought new was DUNKELBLAU!! Dark blue, and I did not like the color (wanted a white TD wagon, but there were none to be found on the east coast). But I got a helluva deal on the sedan, so I took it.

In my mind, it’s better to buy a Volvo that’s 10 years old or less ... no idea why I think that’s important. Who knows what I’d insist on if I had to buy a car, for reals ....

Good person.

It’s a manual wagon. I rest my case.

I seem to recall you saying you wanted another W123...

I thought I said W124 wagon at some point (took the sedan instead way back in ‘87). But this question, for me, is always real world - if I had to climb into something every day and drive for 45 minutes, what would it be?
On the other hand, I’ve been watching Wallander, and he always has a Volvo wagon.
